Biography of Researchers

Dr. Khurshed Alam - a leading sociologist of the country, is a Ph.D. degree holder in Sociology, has 22 years out of which 17 years of post-doctoral experience of working for rural development, rural poverty alleviation program, micro enterprise development, feasibility studies, community participatory rural development programs, health care and family planning program, gender-inclusive development programs and infrastructure development programs. He worked for many national and international organizations including CIDA, DANIDA, World Bank, ADB, NORAD, USAID, BIDS, etc. He also worked as Team Leader for 23 study and evaluation projects.

He has many research works and has 21 articles/review articles, 3 (peer reviewed) research reports, 8 books and 6 manuals as publication in his credit. He has added to the field of knowledge though his important research works. He is currently editing an international Journal entitled "Bangladesh Sociological Studies- An International Biannual Journal".

Dr. Sasanka Das Gupta, a Ph. D. holder in sociology from the University of Patna, India in 1984 worked for last two decades with different development organizations and research firms where he was involved in designing many research works and conducting field level surveys and studies. Before coming to the field of research and consultancy services he was in teaching profession. He did many works for some national and international organizations. Dr. Sasanka has training on project monitoring, data management and data analysis for decision-making.

His main areas of interest are rural studies, peasant studies, biodiversity management, poverty and local economy data mapping, and evaluation of different rural development programs. Recently he worked as the team leader for a ILO study project entitled, "Perception on Worst Forms of Child Labour (WFCL) held by Leaders and Decision Makers in Bangladesh and how these may affect Policy Reform", funded by ILO/IPEC, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

As a committed social researcher he has a good number of publications in his credit, some are with some renowned national scholars.

Mr. Hafizur Rahman, a professional statistician, has a masters degree in statistics from the University of Rajshahi with very good academic background. He works with BISR as a course co-coordinator of "Research Methodology with Application of SPSS'' training course and part-time statistician. Mr. Hafiz also a part-time teacher of a private university.

He has a long eight years working experience in various areas especially research and teaching. Mr. Hafiz has also a good experience in MIS, program planning, networking and implementation for data processing and analysis by using SPSS, EPI Info, Minitab, Fortran, Q Basic, C++, E-views, S-Plus, Statistica and Fox-Pro and other statistical software packages.

He has a long experience of determining sample size and sample design for more than 100 study projects and data management, data processing, tabulation and described statistical results of more than 30 study projects.

Ms. Mahmuda Akhter, a rural economist by background has Maters in Agricultural Economics from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, in the year 2000. Currently she is working for her Ph. D. with the Department of Statistics, Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka. She was actively involved in several rural development projects where she used PRA and FGD methods for assessing rural poverty, potentials of agricultural production, marketing, growing new crops etc. to meet the poverty. She has participated in good number of such studies for BISR and other organizations. At present she is on leave.

Mr. M. Mojahidul Hossain - the regular Research Associate of the BISR, has done MSS degree in Sociology in 2003 from the University of Rajshahi. He has a good academic background. Since then he is working with BISR and other organizations. He has worked for 09 study projects as Research Associate, Field Coordinator, Field Supervisor, Chief Investigator, and Field Investigator on hardcore poor & micro credit, ethnic group, health & health care services, gender discrimination, violence against women, aging issues etc. He is good in pursuing both quantitative and qualitative studies. He is author of one unpublished research report.
